The Transformative Power of Pets

Pets can have an enormous impact on how we feel and how we live. They can improve our emotional and mental well-being, reduce anxiety levels, fight depression, and even enhance our physical health. My own dog, a sweet little Bichon, has brought tremendous joy to my own life, and she is a shining example of what it means to love unconditionally. As a busy professional, I always have a lot on my plate. My dog helps to keep me balanced and stay connected to the spontaneous, playful part of me.

When you look into the loving eyes of a pet, it’s hard to feel angry, frustrated, or sad. And better moods aren’t the only benefit of being a pet-owner. In a study conducted in the 1990’s, hypertensive New York stockbrokers who became pet owners were found to have lower blood pressure and heart rates than those who didn’t get pets. Dog owners spend more time walking than non-pet owners, providing exercise that can decrease stress hormones like cortisol, and increase the release of endorphins, the body's natural mood-enhancers. Physical activity also provides distraction from day-to-day problems and worries. It’s hard to focus on problems when you’re playing catch or running side-by-side with an enthusiastic, furry friend who’s living completely in the moment. Thinking of getting a pet?
